BSNEd Department Launches S.I.G.N. FORWARD Community Extension Program for Calapan Deaf Community

Bachelor of Special Needs Education (BSNEd) Department successfully conducted the first day of its Community Extension Service Program titled “S.I.G.N. FORWARD: Strengthening and Empowering Calapan Deaf Community” on March 7, 2026. The event aimed to empower members of the Calapan Deaf Community through a meaningful seminar and workshop focused on livelihood and small business development.
As the event began, Ms. Nelma L. Viaña, MDMG, Program Head of the BSNEd Department, delivered her opening remarks and warmly welcomed the participants and guest speaker. She emphasized the importance of collaboration and support in creating opportunities for members of the Deaf community. A special message was also delivered by Mr. John Riven Canilang, President of the Calapan Deaf Community, who expressed his gratitude to the organizers and participants who attended the livelihood seminar and workshop.
The highlight of the program was the seminar and workshop facilitated by Mr. Jerzon C. Mateo, the invited guest speaker and trainer. He shared his experiences and expertise in working with individuals with additional needs, inspiring participants while providing valuable insights.
Before the continuation of the workshop, Mr. Noel Comia, Community Extension Service (CES) Coordinator, delivered an inspirational message highlighting the importance of the program. He encouraged the participants to take advantage of the knowledge and skills they would gain from the event, emphasizing how these could open opportunities for their future.
During the workshop proper, Mr. Mateo guided the participants in learning practical skills such as product labeling and logo creation, which are essential steps in establishing and promoting small businesses. The activity aimed to equip members of the Calapan Deaf Community with entrepreneurial knowledge that could help them start their own livelihood ventures.
The S.I.G.N. FORWARD program reflects the BSNEd Department’s commitment to community engagement and inclusive development by empowering the Deaf community through education, skills training, and sustainable livelihood opportunities.
